TIY
Trauma-informed Yoga
TIY is an opportunity to take a general yoga class from a trauma-informed perspective with a trauma-informed yoga facilitator. These sessions are intended to help those impacted by adversity to establish a sense of safety and predictability in the world and take control of what happens to their bodies.
TIY - TRAUMA-INFORMED YOGA
These sessions include breathing, moving, strengthening, stretching and resting like other yoga classes but also can be defined by:
-
small groups with people not too close together
-
no prior yoga experience needed
-
no talking between participants necessary
-
no touch without being asked
-
no partner work
-
no compliments & criticisms
-
no tight 'yoga' clothing
-
instructor understands the triggering/dissociative potential of yoga props/language
-
instruction is invitational
-
emphasis is placed on individual’s choice-making and taking control of what happens to their bodies.
A TIY FACILITATOR WILL:
-
be informed about triggers, flashbacks, dissociative states & overwhelming emotions
-
make space for you to step out of any practice and any class
-
attend to dynamics of safety, especially as they might effect trauma survivors
TRAUMA INFORMED YOGA CLASS IS NOT:
-
TIY classes are not therapy
-
participants will not be asked to share their trauma histories or to process their memories
-
TIY classes draw from TC-TSY methods, research and approach only and are not a substitute for adjunctive therapy within clinical care.
These classes are trauma informed classes. As such, we understand that the content may be triggering. We encourage students to take any necessary steps in their self-care.
